Cruel rituals expose Indian secularism ....

In Indian Tamil Nadu State women are whipped on the promise of drawing away evil spirits.

Men whip women in the presence of hundreds of people. But police take no notice of this torture.

Several women devotees converged at Coimbatore district in India s southern Tamil Nadu state to attend the annual festival to get whipped, following an old belief that it would free them of evil spirits and physical ailments.

The ritual is performed on the occasion of  Vijay Dashami  or the tenth day of the moon rising that signifies the victory of good over the evil and also the Hindu festival of Dussehra, where the temple priest whip the women devotees. Hundreds gathered to witness the traditional ritual and women were seen squatting as a priest continued to whip them.

According to the priests, the ritual has been in vogue for centuries, as is evident from thousands of devotees gathering from various places to get rid of their problems. Women said that after being whipped by the priests, they offer prayers and feel relieved
