During the first round of the NHL entry draft the loudest cheer did not greet the selection of a player. it is not the selection of No. 1 pick that is Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, to Edmonton or even the choice of the Minnesota Wild at No. 10 that is Swedish defenseman Jonas Brodin.
The newly relocated Winnipeg franchise that is formally the Atlanta Thrashers roared when the co-owner Mark Chipman took the podium at the Xcel Energy Center. He announced that the team would be now called the Jets. The choice revived the nickname of the World Hockey Association and NHL franchise that played there from 1972 to 1996 before moving to Phoenix. Chipman called the team the Winnipeg Jets when he introduces General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff to make to No. 7 pick.
There were no major surprises in the first round until the Ranger at No. 15 chose center Jonathan Miller of the United States under-18 team. The United States is ranked as 23rd in the Central Scouting Bureau’s rating of North American Skaters. Miller looked surprised when he heard his name that he has committed to University of North Dakota.
Miller said that he is not lying there, he is just little bit shocked. He also said that he met with Rangers officials only once and thought other teams showed more interest.
Aaron Boogaard, the brother of the late Rangers, people gave him standing ovation before he read Miller’s name. Aaron Boogaard forward Derek Boogaard played for the Wild before the Rangers. The first three picks goes to the three top ranked North American skaters. Nugent-Hopkins was the consensus best player and he is a center from Burnaby B.C. it is the second draft that was held in Minnesota.
